medicare acupuncture coverage

While Medicare has added acupuncture coverage (12 visits for the treatment of low back pain with no specific cause), licensed acupuncturists are not approved payees at this time and Ruby Acupuncture Clinic cannot bill Medicare. Becoming Medicare-approved providers is currently being politically pursued by the acupuncture profession, but as of now, only professions that are currently in the Medicare system can bill for covered acupuncture treatments (medical doctors and chiropractors, for example). However, in New York State, only licensed acupuncturists can needle. Our recommendation is to find a provider that may be dually licensed, which would allow them to bill Medicare and provide acupuncture services.
