The Chinese herbal pharmacopeia consists of over 1000 herbs, a majority of which are plant components. Chinese medicine specializes in formulas/combinations of herbs and not single-herb dosages (common in Western herbalism). Formulas are typically taken from 2 weeks to months depending on your personalized diagnosis and treatment plan. Just like acupuncture, some ailments are treated quickly with herbs and some require extended periods of treatment. Chinese herbs work best when taken as directed (for example 2 times per day) so patients are advised to start herbal formulas when they are ready to administer them successfully. Formulas come in a variety of forms: pills, granules (a powder dissolved in water), or raw herbs that you cook at home. As a patient, all options will be discussed with you by your licensed practitioner to find the best fit.
Some ailments are better treated with herbs than acupuncture, which your provider may discuss with you. Taking Chinese herbal formulas can also augment your existing acupuncture treatments (since you are administering them everyday verses acupuncture that occurs weekly or less often). Chinese herbs are not appropriate for all patients. Western medications can interact with herbs and patients on multiple prescription medications may be contraindicated from taking formulas. Ask your acupuncture provider if an herbal formula might be right for you!
Taking formulas is not the only way to incorporate Chinese herbs into your lifestyle! Many single herbs are also foods that we have regular access to like ginger, dates or goji berries. Ask your acupuncturist about different foods or herbs to incorporate into your diet and how to prepare them. We also use herbs to make our topicals!
